General Description
Responsible for providing quality care and nurturing for the children of Bryan’s House in a manner that meets their emotional, social and physical needs, and supports their cognitive development.
Key Responsibilities
PROGRAMMING
- Develop and implement program goals that support family and children’s needs in accordance with NAEYC criteria.
- Provide integrated activity plans that meet the needs of individual children.
- Plan and implement experiences that promote children’s cognitive, physical, relational, and emotional development.
- Assist children with and encourage independence as appropriate with daily living activities) diapering/toileting, feeding, dressing, bathing, sleeping, etc.)
- Serve meals family style and promote healthy eating practices.
- Plan and implement daily activity plans in a complete and timely manner.
COMMUNICATION
- Communicate with children at their developmental level in a manner that fosters positive self-esteem and conveys respect (ask open-ended questions, speak to children at eye-level, sit with children at circle time, tone and volume of voice doesn’t over-bear room)
- Ensure that special instructions for children’s care from parents, nursing or other professionals are followed.
- Promote communication with TEAM members through progress notes, TEAM meetings, daily logs, etc.
- Communicate regularly with families in a respectful manner to update them on their child’s experiences in the program and to get feedback from the family.
Provide direct supervision at all assigned times (can see and hear them, on playground walk around, walk the classroom during center activities). Room checks every 15 minutes overnight.- Facilitate volunteer appropriateness in supporting Bryan’s House educational philosophy (guide and give suggestions to volunteers, alert supervisor of issues.)
- Monitor children transported on the van.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
- Maintain appropriate room arrangement to support program goals (keep table-top activities out, add enhancements to center areas)
- Re-supply shelves with consumable supplies as needed.
- Maintain a neat and orderly environment and the safety and cleanliness of respite care areas (keep children’s rooms neat and clean, classroom is picked up before class leaves the area, tables cleaned after meals, food and cleaning supplies are stored properly).
- Follow Health Department guidelines in proper storage of dry and prepared food and maintain sanitary conditions in food preparation.
GENERAL
- Report and document incidents and concerns in a timely manner (suspicion of abuse or neglect, other incidents that require a warning, injuries, illness and other incidents.)
- Maintain client confidentiality at all times.
- Follow Standard (Universal) Precautions in the care of children.
- Attend staff meetings regularly.
- Complete 30 hours of required training each year, including HIV/AIDS updates, CPR/first aid, child development, SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome.
- Participate in agency events such as Family Nights, Holiday party, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
Minimum: GED or high school diploma. Preferred: at least 12 college hours in early childhood or related area of study and two years experience working with children.
Ability to apply knowledge of child development, interact appropriately with children and plan activities that meet goals for children.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with children, parent, related staff, volunteers, and outside agencies.
Physical ability to care for and interact with children, including lifting, bending and carrying, and maintaining cleanliness of facility.
Sensitivity to cultural and lifestyle differences and ability to relate well to persons with various ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles.
CPR and First Aid Certification.
